The OS-30 electric ocean science winch is a single drum, direct pull type unit utilizing a single electric motor and a planetary multistage gear reducer. The motor is driven via an ABB variable frequency drive.
A grooved shell is used to guide the first layer of cable onto the drum, which provides important physical reference for all the subsequent layers.
The levelwind contains a dual axis load pin mounted as a sheave shaft for tension measurement. The levelwind is chain driven off the winch drum stub shaft. The stub shaft is designed to accommodate a Focal Model 180 Slip Ring.
